Adds functionality to help guide and protect users while browsing the internet.Browsing Shield attempts to inform and protect users while browsing the internet. The extension does this by checking the site's reputation, checking for any suspected malicious links, and by blocking any known crypto miners.  

 Browsing Shield's goal is to be as non-intrusive as possible while helping make user's more aware of how safe or unsafe the pages they're visiting are. Browsing Shield's icon, when clicked, displays a breakdown of the aforementioned aspects of the current active tab's web page. This information should help the user make an informed decision about the security of the pages and links they're visiting. 

In order to check a site's reputation, Browsing Shield queries an api to see if the larger internet community suspects or has observed any sort of malicious behavior with that site. To ensure their are no suspected malicious links on the current web page, Browsing Shield scans the  page for links and then sends them to an API to be checked for known malicious behavior. If one or more of those links is suspected of being malicious Browsing Shield attempts to inject a small amount of html into the page that displays a warning that link may be malicious when the user hovers over it. To protect against crypto miners Browsing Shield actively blocks them from running.

The two APIs that Browsing Shield uses are Web of Trust's Reputation API and Google Safe Browsing API.

Browsing Shield is currently in a very early stage but additional features are planned to be added in the near future. Features such as more obvious alerting of the user to potential issues, security recommendations, checking for hidden inputs that collect user data, blocking user tracking scripts, and much more are being road mapped for future releases.
